Cocktail attire is optional. We don't expect (or want) people to be confined to gender-conforming, expensive suits and dresses. We want people to feel like they look good and to feel like themselves.
You can't go wrong with black on black, which is probably what most of us feel comfortable with anyways! Other monochrome palettes work too.

But above all: please dress comfortably and please be yourself!
